Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival’s Miss Represented project operates as an arts collective working with vulnerable young women who are navigating difficult life situations and are considered at risk.
Using the arts as a vehicle for self expression and investigating relevant themes and topics, Miss Represented creates a safe environment to deliver tailor made projects resulting in exhibitions, events or performances of high artistic quality.
The aim is to inspire socially excluded young women and stimulate aspirations by facilitating a meaningful, reflective process in which young women can explore issues, feel empowered and have their voices heard.
We aim to challenge society’s view of young women that are deemed to be displaying risky or challenging behaviour by making the work visible and creating partnerships.
Using the arts we aim to help young women to:
• Develop social, political and media literacy and awareness
• Feel they have a safe and supportive space for personal development
• Move away from reactive choices to informed decision making
• Develop self-worth and feel empowered
• Experience collaboration, group processes and form positive relationships
• Pursue purpose and passions
• Develop skills in the arts and beyond, creating pathways for future employment or education
This project seeks to shine a light on the children and young people whose humanity, intelligence and talents have been obscured by simplistic labels and a lack of opportunity to discover their potential. It provides an opportunity to connect with these young people and to encourage the community to reach out the hand of friendship to others who need to know that they are valued and belong.
Using a multi-disciplinary applied arts approach as a vehicle for exploration and expression, we investigate issues around domestic abuse, sex and consent, media representations of women and female empowerment, relationships, pressures and power within our communities, self worth and identity. There is also an emphasis on the ‘future self’ with pathways to further education, employment or apprenticeships.
