Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra: New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala

On sale Mon 7 Oct

Stephen Bell Conductor
Ailish Tynan Soprano

Stephen Bell makes a welcome return to Brighton as guest conductor for BPO’s annual Viennese Gala, joined by the Irish soprano Ailish Tynan who will perform a selection of delightful songs and arias from operettas and musicals written in the 19th century and beyond.

Ailish won the Rosenblatt Recital Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2003, has appeared at both the first and last night of the BBC Proms, and enjoys a thriving international career as an opera singer, recitalist and recording artist.

Celebrating the New Year is inextricably linked to the fabulous melodies of the Strauss family. Their family name has become synonymous with the wonderful tunes which dominated the musical life of Vienna in the late 19th century. For this concert Stephen has hand-picked some favourites from the waltz kings of Vienna and will also introduce you to some not so well known, but equally brilliant compositions. Composers from around the world, seeing how well known these pieces were becoming, wrote equally fabulous compositions, some of which BPO will include in its programme.

Programme

Johann Strauss II Overture: Die Fledermaus
Johann Strauss II Laughing Song (Die Fledermaus)
Josef Strauss Frauenherz Op.166 (A Woman’s Heart)
Robert Stolz Du Sollst Der Kaiser (Der Favorit)
Emmerich Kálmánn Overture: Countess Mariza
Josef Strauss Ohne Sorgen! Polka Op.271 (Without a Care!)
Eduard Strauss Knall und Fall Polka Op.132
Franz Lehár Meine Lippen (Giuditta)
Franz Lehár Gold und Silber Waltz Op.79

Johann Strauss II The Blue Danube Waltz Op.314

This is always one of BPO’s most popular concerts of the season, and has become part of the cultural calendar of the city.

BPO is most grateful to the John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust for their continued support of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra and of BPO’s annual New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala.
