An evening of music and word in support of Ukraine. A generation of artists, writers and thinkers lived and loved through the reality of two world wars - Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, W. H. Auden, E. M. Forster, Frances Partridge and more. Pacifists and freedom fighters, soldiers, civilians and refugees; these are their words.
‘I’ve just stopped talking to you. It seems so strange. It’s perfectly peaceful here – they’re playing bowls – I’d just put flowers in your room. And you sit there with the bombs falling around you. What can one say – except that I love you and I’ve got to live through this strange quiet evening thinking of you sitting there alone.’ -Virginia Woolf’s last letter to Vita Sackville West
Their letters, diaries and writings capture a world transformed by war – from intensely personal letters of love and grief to public outcries for peace – and speak to the current conflict in Ukraine. Their words are as powerful today as they were a century ago.
For one night only, an all-star cast including Adjoa Andoh, Toby Jones and Joely Richardson bring these timely and poignant writings to life. They are accompanied by live music performances with pianist Melvyn Tan and cellist, Steven Isserlis.
With generous support from Letters Live.
Music and Word is BSL interpreted by Katie Fenwick, Manda Steff and Andrea Newland.
