The Voice’s Mark De-Lisser to lead local choir as part of reggae celebration The Trojan Story
26 Sep 2018
Gospel choir leader Mark De-Lisser – known for arranging Stand By Me for the 2018 Royal Wedding and working as a vocal coach on TV shows ranging from The Voice to Eurovision – will lead Brighton-based choir The Dulcetones as part of The Trojan Story in the Concert Hall this Saturday (29 Sep).
The Dulcetones will be singing hits such as Bob Marley’s Lively Up Yourself and Jimmy Cliff’s Wonderful World, Beautiful People, sharing the stage with Jazz Jamaica All Stars and singers Brinsley Forde, Noel McKoy and Dem Three to celebrate 50 years of Trojan Records. Jazz Jamaica Artistic Director, Gary Crosby, has hand-picked established and rising stars to perform, including award-winning saxophonists Denys Baptiste and Camilla George, trumpeter Mark Kavuma, and Shirley Tetteh on guitar. They will be joined by members of the jazz string quartet, Tomorrow’s Warriors StringTing.
The Trojan Story will feature many of the best-loved anthems from the label over the past 50 years, including Desmond Dekker’s hit Israelites, Tony Tribe’s classic Red Red Wine and Harry J All Stars’ The Liquidator, specially arranged by Jason Yarde.
Mark De-Lisser’s varied experience in the choral world includes providing the 30 piece choir for Stormzy in his live festival tour, so audiences can look forward to seeing how his approach will complement the sound of The Dulcetones’ vintage-inspired repertoire of classic tunes and unusual treats.
The Trojan Story pays homage to the pioneering record label. Established in 1968, the London-based company was the first to distribute the music of Jamaica on a grand scale, becoming for many in the UK the first point of contact with Jamaican music and culture. From the beginning, Trojan encouraged people to celebrate and unite through music, breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity.

Gary Crosby, Artistic Director of Jazz Jamaica and creator of The Trojan Story: ‘Jazz Jamaica All Stars loves working with local choirs as it brings the community into the show and adds the Caribbean flavour. Mark De-Lisser is the master of all choir leaders. We look forward to The Dulcetones raising the roof off Brighton Dome.’
Sarah Gardner, Choir Leader for The Dulcetones: ‘We began as a small group at Middle Street School around seven years ago, and these days we've grown and shared some brilliant musical adventures and experiences together. We are delighted to be performing on the Brighton Dome stage this week to provide some massive backing vocals and bonus good vibes for the incredibly talented Jazz Jamaica All Stars. We'll be singing some absolute classics... Lively Up Yourself and Wonderful World, Beautiful People to name a few, with a little help from Mark De-Lisser who we are incredibly excited to be working with. This is a gig not to be missed!’
