Build Brighton Dome

Two of our venues, Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre have recently undergone a major transformation as part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s future vision to reaffirm the Royal Pavilion Estate as a key cultural destination.

Since being converted into a performance space in 1867, our venues have been graced by an array of illustrious artists, writers, musicians, actors and directors - from Bowie to Beyonce. These magnificent spaces have had many guises over the last 200 years including a Victorian skating rink and a First World War military hospital and we are now bringing them back together as Brighton’s leading arts venue. 

The Grade I listed Corn Exchange was built in the early 19th century for the Prince Regent as his riding house, located next to his stables which is now Brighton Dome Concert Hall. Its unique architectural features include the widest span timber frame in the country as well as the large decorative windows and ornate stonework.

The Grade II listed Studio Theatre was added in 1935 to house catering facilities for the Corn Exchange, as well as a ‘supper room’ used for conferences, meetings and dinners. It eventually became the Pavilion Theatre and was renamed in 2012 as the Studio Theatre used for smaller performing arts events.

The refurbishment project began in 2017 and despite the many complexities of restoring a heritage building - including the unexpected discovery of a Quaker burial ground and the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic - the refurbishment is nearly complete.

The much-needed improvements include the conservation of important heritage features; better public and artist facilities including accessible toilets, hearing assistance systems, wheelchair access and Anita’s Room, a new creative space for community groups and emerging artists to develop their work.
