Deaf Diaspora 2017: Access to Arts

Deaf Diaspora is an annual event taking place across the world to bring attention to the language and culture of Deaf people globally. This year we are celebrating Art (theatre, dance, visual art) made by Deaf people and exploring the influence of this on the mainstream. At this event, there will be talks, discussions, stalls and behind the scenes BSL interpreted backstage tours of Brighton Dome’s historic venue.

Talks and Discussions – Brighton Dome Founders Room

10.00am: Introduction to Deaf Diaspora

10.30am to 11am: Nikki Stratton (Director of Zebra Uno and Co-founder of Deaffest) discusses Deaffest

Deaffest supports and develops the talents of emerging and established deaf filmmakers and artists from the UK and around the world. The annual festival showcases films and documentaries by international filmmakers. Exhibitions, seminars, workshops, parties and networking take place at the festival and everyone is welcome to take part, sharing their interest in films and the arts.

11am to 11.15am: Audience Q&A

11.15am to 11.30am: Break

11.30am to 12pm: Tanya Peters (Director of Artistic Planning at Brighton Dome) discusses the Brighton Dome and Festival performance and Assisted performance programme

Brighton Dome is the south coast's premier multi-arts venue. Each year, we present and produce over 600 events spanning music, theatre, dance, comedy, literature, spoken word, visual arts, film, digital and more. In addition to the year-round programme, each May we produce England's leading and most-progressive mixed-arts celebration, the internationally-acclaimed Brighton Festival.

12pm to 12.15pm: Audience Q&A

12.15pm to 1.30pm: Break

1.30pm to 3.15pm: Topics will be about museums by Alison Rogers and John Wilson.

(They will talk about their experience as Deaf BSL guides)

3.15pm to 4pm: All guests will be on stage to discuss together.

*Alison Rogers will host in the morning and Edward Richards will host in the afternoon.*

Free BSL Interpreted Backstage Tours

Slots: 12.30pm, 2pm and 4pm.

Free backstage tours focusing on our venue's rich heritage will be available on Saturday 30th September as part of Deaf Diaspora: Access to Arts day, and include integrated BSL interpretation.

Places on the tours are very limited and can only be booked at the Deaf Diaspora stall in the Brighton Dome Foyer on Saturday 30th September from 10am

Healthy Relationship in Art by Clare Chilton from Deaf Hope

Deaf Hope’s mission is to end domestic and sexual violence in Deaf communities through empowerment, education and services.

2pm to 3pm

Don't Box In Us by Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq, Artist

Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq is a Deaf British born Muslim artist based in London. Her works are an exploration through the layers of colour and texture into the depths of culture. Influenced by comparisons of the Eastern and Western world, her work represents many aspects of the Muslim culture, feminism, deafness, Deaf identity and the way we live today.
