During Refugee Week (17–23 June) people across the city celebrate the contribution that refugees & migrants have made and continue to make to Brighton & Hove. This year’s theme is ‘You, Me and Those Who Came Before'.
Sanctuary on Sea’s flagship Refugee Week event, Together, is largely organised by refugees and groups working with migrants who will be running stalls, drumming workshops, poetry and book readings, film screenings, art installations, doll and puppet making, henna hand painting and games, as well as serving delicious food from around the world, plus many more activities bringing people together.

Programme on the day...
- Join the Refugees & Migrants Self Support Group for ‘You, Me and Those Who Came Before’, a debate on this year’s Refugee Week theme (12–2pm, Old Court House, Brighton Museum). Chaired by Richard Williams (Sanctuary on Sea), the discussion panel includes: Zouhir Masri (Syrian refugee journalist), Dr. Jacob Berkson (co-founder of Thousand 4 1000), Dina Nayeri (author of The Ungrateful Refugee), Jerida (All African Women Group) and Naqeeb Saide (Hummingbird Young Leader)
- Flag and bunting making in support of the Fly the Flag campaign, to be displayed alongside artist Ai Weiwei's new flag in honour of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Brighton Dome's foyer until Friday 12 July
- 2pm welcome by Cllr Alex Phillips, Mayor of Brighton & Hove
- West African drumming workshop led by Ali Bagoura
- Sandpainting with Mo Saine
- Ndebele doll making with Phati Mnguni
- Films and poetry with Euro-Mernet
- Clay therapy workshop with Voices in Exile
- Making activities and a place to feel connected with Crisis Classroom
- Talk by Dina Nayeri, author of The Ungrateful Refugee
- Interactive art installation by Gil Mualem Doron on theme of isolation & loneliness
- ‘State of Limbo’, a short documentary on immigrant detention in UK
- Tapestry workshop with Network of International Woman
- Collaborative community portrait with the Global Social Club
- Family book reading with Brighton & Hove Libraries
- Delicious food by Baobab Café and Sudanese and Oromo communities
- Book stalls and stalls run by Hummingbird, Amnesty, Sanctuary on Sea, Global Social Club, Stand Up to Racism, Sussex Interpreting Service, Fostering service and Calais Action
- Table Tennis with Brighton Table Tennis Club, a club of sanctuary
