Material Men & Strange Blooms

Mon 3 Aug 2015

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance brings the much-acclaimed Strange Blooms (2013) twinned with a brand new work.

Material Men is a virtuoso piece for two dazzling performers, Sooraj Subramaniam and Shailesh Bahoran, artists of the Indian diaspora, each of whom chose to dance very differently. Contrasts in style between classical and hip hop, as well as similarities of origin, are the starting points for a dynamic exploration of rhythm, location and shared history. Material Men features newly commissioned music by award-winning Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin performed live by The Smith Quartet and Leafcutter John adds his own unique sound design.

Strange Blooms completes the double bill. Inspired by the cellular life of plants it pits the energy of eight dancers against the pulsating music of Gabriel Prokofiev's score.
