International Women's Day Open House

Brighton Dome and Brighton Women's Centre present our annual celebration of International Women's Day, taking place in every nook and cranny of the cafe-bar, Founders Room and Corn Exchange. 

A marketplace of ideas, workshops and artisan gifts is at the heart of a free programme of art and debate. Enjoy stalls, talks, tasters and specially commissioned work reflecting on the issues raised throughout the day including Miss Represented, who will be exploring identity through self-portraits and enamel jewellery-making workshops. Our cafe will be open as usual and The Real Junk Food Project will be providing lunch on a pay-as-you-feel basis.

The day will be hosted by Rachel Nwokoro (UK SLAM! Champion), highlights include:

• Workshops on women’s self defence, speaking with impact, a creative writing workshop led by poet Evlynn Sharp & more 
• Live performances throughout the day on the Corn Exchange Main Stage including Qukulele (9 women ukulele band), Brighton acoustic artist Bella Kardasis and We Bop (all women a capella choir)
  
• Faye Houston, incredible singer of reggae dub act Resonators brings us her solo material, co-writing and performing with soulful guitarist Mike Shirley 
  
• Panel Discussion: 'What are the key issues facing women today and how can we work across divisions to achieve progress?'. Panellists include MP Caroline Lucas, FGM campaigner Nimco Ali, local activist Emily Wright, performance and theatre-maker Nadia Nadarajah and Poppy Burt, a single mother studying youth work at Brighton University. Having experienced challenging situations as a young person, she works on two targeted youth work projects including Brighton Dome’s Miss Represented. Chaired by Razia Aziz
  
• A women’s history walk - enjoy an introduction to the women’s history of our city by taking a short gentle stroll around the Pavilion Estate
• Exhibitions from Brighton Dome’s flagship outreach project Miss Represented, which works with young women from across Brighton, and artist Bern O’Donoghue who explores issues and myths surrounding migration in the installation Dead Reckoning
  

You can also drop in to a craft workshop run by Brighton Sewing Bee, relax with complementary therapies, enjoy a selection of topical films and films for children and more!

All activities, except for the complementary therapies, are FREE. Workshops can be booked on the day and are for those who identify as women, places are limited, so come early to reserve a space.

The Montefiore Hospital and Gatwick Airport are helping us to make Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival more accessible for all.
