Honouring LGBTQ+ poets for LGBT History Month
Experience the power of poetry this spring at Brighton Dome as we honour LGBTQ+ poets for LGBT History Month this Feb.
Led by acclaimed spoken word performer and Brighton Dome In-House Artist AFLO. the poet, these nights feature fresh talent alongside special guests.
Jasmine Gardosi (they/she), the Birmingham Poet Laureate and multiple slam champion, is an acclaimed beatboxer, winner of the Out-Spoken Prize for Poetry, and the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Performer 2023. Her work, which delves into identity, LGBTQ issues, and mental health, has been showcased with Button Poetry, Tate Modern, Glastonbury Festival, and BBC, including a feature on Sky Arts' BAFTA-winning Life & Rhymes. Gardosi has held residencies at the Brontë Parsonage Museum and Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and her show ‘Dancing To Music You Hate’, blending poetry, beatboxing, and Celtic dubstep, won acclaim at Warwick Arts Centre.
Caz Teague (they/them) is the creator of the musical project “Caz Smiling” which blends music, spoken word and illustration to creatively communicate ideas around mental health and queer identity. Caz was the international guest at the Portugal Slam in Lisbon in October 2018 and the poet in residence at the Stanza poetry festival in St. Andrews, Scotland in March 2019, continuing to perform their work regularly at poetry and literary events across the UK. They also curated from 2017- 2022 London’s only regular 3-round Slam, Genesis Poetry Slam, and they are an artist-in-residence at the Vauxhall-based queer cabaret night Bar Wotever, with their first poetry collection 'Good Earth' now out with Burning Eye Books, 2019.
AFLO. the poet (she/they) is an award-winning Brighton-based spoken word artist, activist and academic who embraces creative expression to disrupt the status quo and inspire social change. AFLO. uses poetry as a vehicle to address topics like racism and mental health, primarily speaking from her lived experiences. AFLO. also hosts and curates her own gigs with an ever-evolving Brighton-based collective of Black maginalised-gendered artists, 'AFLO. and the Poets'. AFLO. is currently an in-house artist for Brighton Dome.
