Kate Rusby at Christmas

Wed 24 Apr 2013

Kate Rusby is steeped in her local traditions and will showcase the carols and songs learnt through childhood in her native South Yorkshire. Come along to hear new variations of familiar carols mostly unheard outside the area together with a selection of old favourites.

This unmissable evening of entertainment will feature songs from Kate’s two albums of Yorkshire-inspired songs and carols. Kate is touring this Christmas season with her hugely talented band, complete with brass quintet – a rousing Christmas celebration!

Of all the stars in Folk Music’s wondrous firmament few shine as brightly as Yorkshire’s Kate Rusby.

A remarkable interpretive singer, Kate’s soulful vocals resonate with the wistful beauty of an earthbound angel. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction – no matter how old or how modern – she has that rare ability to transport her audience, of touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination.

South Yorkshire has a very strong tradition of carol singing starting early November. Sunday lunchtimes see 100s of carollers cram into various pubs in the locality to join in the unashamedly joyous singing – standing room only! At its heart, it represents an oral tradition, constantly evolving, passed down from generation to generation, with roots dating back over 200 years.
