Volunteering

Meet new people and learn new skills

How we work with Volunteers

It’s Volunteers Week and we'd like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers for the wonderful work they do.

During Brighton Festival over 200 volunteers supported activities across the city, from welcoming visitors to performances and events, to introducing visitors to our history and heritage stories; helping to gather market research data and meeting and greeting visiting artists.

We now have a regular year-round volunteer team of over 140 volunteers in our Front of House and Heritage Teams who dedicate their time, their enthusiasm and their skill to supporting our work. We simply couldn’t do all that we do without them.

‘I'm so glad I signed up for this. It's one of the best decisions I've made and genuinely brings me joy and has really given me a lift. I hope I have been an effective member of the team so far. Thank you for the opportunity’

 – Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival volunteer

Volunteers work alongside our experienced and passionate Front of House team. Their contribution is invaluable. Like many other arts charities, volunteers from our community play a key role at Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival. The effort and generosity of volunteers helps to ensure that we can continue to stage new artistic commissions, support emerging and established artists, and develop innovative and inclusive new work.

Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival works with volunteers across our events, heritage, and festival activities. We offer a rewarding and engaging programme that encourages people of all backgrounds to connect with each other, their community, and the arts.

Volunteers can choose to volunteer for the events that interest them – for example, heritage, community events, dance, contemporary and classical music. They can also choose to join on a seasonal basis only if they wish.

What our Volunteers say

‘It has given me confidence and allowed me to explore positions I may want to pursue later. It has given me a sense of purpose and community and allowed me to attend some great events and meet great people’

‘It has brought me joy and positivity and really given me a boost to my mental health and well-being. I feel excited about the next shift and the future possibilities that volunteering at Brighton Dome will bring’

‘They gave me a chance, which is a big thing for me’

‘So far it has only been a joy! After 39 years of pressurised full-time work, it is like bathing in milk and honey. Interesting, diverting and sooooo enjoyable’

Good Space, founded by Brighton Dome

Among the many individual benefits volunteering can have, is a positive impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing. It’s a way of engaging with the community, rebuilding confidence, and growing an interest in the arts. It can also be a less pressurised environment in which to try something new, allowing participants to gain valuable experience and improve prospects for employment.

As one of the founders of volunteering platform Good Space, we want to inspire everyone to volunteer, particularly those for whom participation has often been a barrier. By volunteering with Brighton Dome, you become part of a larger network of Sussex Arts and Culture volunteers, where there will be occasional opportunities to meet and to exchange experiences, at other exciting venues.

Our volunteer opportunities are supported by Good Space, funded through Arts Council England and UK Government funding www.goodspace.org.uk
