Get to know: Stand Up Comedian Lou Sanders

Lou Sanders is a rising star of the comedy world. Best known for being champion of 2019’s Taskmaster and her regular TV appearances on QI, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Hypothetical and her recent appearance in Aisling Bea’s sitcom This Way Up.

Returning from Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Lou Sanders is set to start a tour of her latest show Say Hello To Your New Step Mummy. Ahead of her tour, Lou Sanders joins us at Live at Brighton Dome on Sat 5 Oct along with acclaimed stand-up comedians Nina Conti, Glenn Moore, Jessica Fostekew and Angelos Epithemio. We catch up with Lou to talk about performing, podcasts and her biggest fans.

So, you’ve just come back from the Fringe where you took your latest show Say Hello to Your New Step-Mummy – what was your best Edinburgh moment?

I got a 10% discount on a book because he recognised me and ‘quite’ liked my stuff.

What’s one word that describes your show?

Enlightening!

What does a day in the life of Lou Sanders look like on tour? Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Some of the shows I’ll bring a support act (a mate) with me, so that it’s more fun (more fun and of course it’s contractually obliged to be a certain length). I’ve just realised I have booked a tour show on my birthday, so I’ll bring a pal and get a much nicer hotel for that one. Maybe we’ll play scrabble in the bar or something wild! Happy birthday to everyone I guess.

We love your podcast! What’s your favourite podcast (other than yours of course)?

I have only just come across Where Should We Begin? and it’s a fascinating insight into couples, love, relationship patterns and why we do the things we do. The host/counsellor is so tuned in it’s phenomenal. I also LOVE John Robins and Elis James & their 5 Live podcast – they’re so funny.

What is your favourite part of performing?

The connection with the audience and the fact you can always learn and do more/be better.

What’s your best life advice?

Do scoot around for that black sock left in the washing machine before you put your white wash on. That, and no one’s thinking about you as much as you think they are.

What’s been the weirdest thing a fan has said to you after a show?

I don’t know but this great, nice guy (a comedy fan called Dan) made a replica of a Taskmaster studio with very intricate tiny versions of some of the games and jokes and it was delightful. Must have taken him ages. It was weird in the loveliest, best way!

What’s your favourite thing about Brighton?

The sea. And all the vegan places. And the size is perfect – you can use your feet if you’ve got them. And Brighton people seem to like comedy.

What are you most looking forward to at Live at Brighton Dome?

All that sexy connection!
