As a makeshift hospital for wounded soldiers during World War I, a World War II dance hall and even a sporting venue, Brighton Dome has served the city and community for over 150 years.
On Thursday 23 February our Snapshots with Phil Morgan event will share some extraordinary 1940s photographs and artefacts found under the Concert Hall stage during renovations and take an in-depth look at the role Brighton Dome has played from the 1930s to the present day.
On Thursday 23 March we’ll explore the fascinating life of Mary Clarke and Brighton’s suffrage movement in Mary Clarke, the Dome and the Suffrage Struggle. Sister of the legendary Emmeline Pankhurst, Mary was a Brighton Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) organiser. Known for her wit, intelligence and strength, Mary was the first woman to die as part of the suffrage struggle. Local women’s rights campaigner, Jean Calder, will examine Mary’s story the history of suffrage in Brighton and its links to our historic venue.
A local historic landmark was Volk’s Electric Railway - the oldest electric railway in the world! A talk on Magnus Volk and his Amazing Railway on Thursday 20 April will share all there is to know about the Brighton-born inventor and electrical pioneer behind this much-loved attraction. Not only was Volk the first person in Brighton to light his home by electricity, he also was also responsible for introducing electric lighting to the Royal Pavilion Estate.
