Miss Represented Exhibition

Fri 13 Dec – Sun 5 Jan

The latest creative chapter from Miss Represented, Brighton Dome’s flagship outreach project, is open to the public.

This current group’s first small sharing, from what will continue as a longer term project, comes in the form of a photographic exhibition giving a unique insight into the identity and thoughts of these extraordinary young women.

Over the past eight weeks Miss Represented have been sharing experiences and exploring themes around labels, equality, perspective, inner feelings and outer appearances, media representations of women and personal identities.

Ideas and thoughts are shared in this exhibition revealing complex layers and important voices in our community.

Miss Represented is an ongoing project run by Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival working with young, vulnerable women who are negotiating difficult life circumstances. It aims to inspire socially excluded young women and stimulate aspirations by facilitating meaningful, reflective process in which young women can explore issues, feel empowered and have their voices heard.

The group operates as an arts collective, navigating and creating as they investigate themes around identity, relationships, sisterhood, social comment, crime and their own personal experiences. Using an applied arts, multi-disciplinary approach, Miss Represented facilitates a meaningful, reflective process in which young women can explore issues, feel empowered, build their resilience and have their voices heard.

Rebecca Fidler, Creative Learning Manager, said, “This project seeks to shine a light on the young people whose humanity, intelligence and talents can often be obscured by labels and a lack of opportunity to discover their potential. Miss Represented provides an opportunity to connect with these young people and to encourage the community to reach out the hand of friendship to others who need to know that they are valued and belong.“

The project is run in conjunction with the Youth Offending Service and Brighton and Hove City Council.
