SPECTRUM: Interview with Chloé Bodur

In anticipation of SPECTRUM's upcoming day festival, we sat down with Chloe Bodur, a 19-year-old singer/songwriter who fuses elements of neo-soul, jazz and pop to create an utterly distinctive style.

When did you start writing music?
My Mum claims that I was already making up my own songs in the bath when I was a toddler. I used writing poetry as a form of self-expression through my teens, but I never shared my writing with anyone. I started putting words to music and songwriting properly though when I was about 17.

What track are you most proud of?
Glory is the only song of mine that I’ve released so far but I am super proud of how it sounds. You can stream it here: https://hyperurl.co/e0vcvx

How would you describe your music?
I completely embrace all of the different musical influences that each of my bandmates bring to the table. I’d say my music, brought to life by the five boys that play with me, is a mixture of soul, funk, jazz, hiphop and RnB with sprinkles of psychedelia and rock too. It seems to be enjoyed both by people my age and my mums age which I love! Good music should translate to everyone.

What are the main influences on your sound?
As far as modern bands go, I’d say that Hiatus Kaiyote, and D'Angelo are a big influence on our live sound

My writing and phrasing is inspired by older artists like Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Austrud Gilberto and Anita Baker; all music I grew up listening to, courtesy of my Mum!

Have you released any albums yet? Are you signed to a label?
No album yet, but hopefully one day! I’m currently completely independent; no label, manager etc. Just me and a laptop.

What are your plans for the near-future?
I’m sitting on a few recordings that are almost finished at the moment. I’m hoping to release them as an EP later on this year.

What does it mean to you to perform at Brighton Dome?
It’s such a beautiful and prestigious venue, we’re honoured to play there!
