Take 5 with award-winning writer of Bangers, Danusia Samal
Danusia has a covetable career spanning stage, screen and radio. From writing on hit TV shows Gangs of London (Sky) and Bodies (Netflix), and acting credits including Emmy Award-winning The Great and The Serial Killer’s Wife (Paramount+), Danusia is now bringing her Edinburgh Fringe hit, Bangers, to The Studio Theatre 20 - 22 Mar.
We were able to catch up with her about the show...
1. What inspired you to write Bangers?
I was really interested in the music we love, how it shapes us as we grow up and how at odds the lyrics can be with our beliefs as adults. When you're dancing to music made by an artist whose morals you don’t agree with, but it's the one time you feel truly free; I wanted to write about that, and the story of Clef and Aria kind of emerged from the music.

2. Sum up the show in three words!
Complex, energetic, banging.
3. You have an incredible backlog of work, what’s something that you love about Bangers compared to your other projects and achievements?
Thank-you! I love that Bangers has had so many lives and evolves with every production. I love the songs, and I love the fact that the audience are so much a part of the show.

4. Tell us more about your own connection to the UK garage scene.
I was a kid when it first got big, but I actually wasn't living in the UK for a lot of it, so I discovered garage later on in my teens and really fell in love with it as an adult. I could lie and tell you some exciting stories about going to underground raves, but I was probably too much of a nerd for that.
5. And finally, why is Bangers perfect for Brighton audiences?
Brighton is such a buzzy, vibey city with a rich theatre and music scene. I feel like audiences here will get this story instantly - and I promise you a night of nostalgia, emotion, and dancing in your seat (or on your feet, we welcome that too!).
