Brighton Dome to mark Heritage Open Days 2022 with free family workshops and backstage tours
7 Sep 2022
Brighton Dome’s annual Heritage Open Day returns on Sunday 11 September with a chance to look behind the scenes of the historic building and take part in a range of free family activities. As the major refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Grade I and Grade II listed Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre nears completion, there’s a unique chance to discover the secrets of the Concert Hall with a free backstage tour.
This year’s national Heritage Open Day theme is Astounding Inventions, exploring England’s history of invention and innovation. Brighton Dome will invite visitors to explore how innovation and technological advances have transformed its venues since 1803. Find out how local inventor Magnus Volk brought electricity to the Royal Pavilion Estate, join in our technical theatre workshops or watch award-winning local theatre company Windmill Young Actors bring the fascinating history of Brighton Dome to life.
Listen to local artists Tristan Sharps (dreamthinkspeak), Anahita Wilson, Ram Samocha (Draw to Perform) and Emma Lindsay (Sussex Dance Network) discuss how the local buildings inspire their creative work.
Melissa Paice and Levi Cano, students from Brighton’s Waterbear College of Music, perform songs by iconic artists who have graced the stage at Brighton Dome in years gone by including Stevie Wonder, ABBA, Ella Fitzgerald and Corinne Bailey Rae.
Families can also join the free ‘Make a Tile’ mosaic workshop, dress up as their favourite Dome idol or take a photo in the Gladrags photobooth. There’s also the chance to discover memories of Brighton Dome from days gone by with the ‘I Was There’ project.
Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations. Brought to you by the National Trust with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, it brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history. Stories are told, traditions explored, and histories brought to life. It’s a chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free.
Full details and timings of all activities are on our website at https://brightondome.org/event/30303/heritage_open_day_2022/
All sessions are free but pre-booking is essential.
