Trope is Brighton Dome's spoken word showcase in partnership with Apples and Snakes, featuring top UK spoken word artists, local musicians, poetry film and an open mic.

Each Trope has a theme, and this month we’re looking at HAPPINESS. What is it? Can we truly have it? Is it an end in itself? What makes us happy? Big questions for a big night! The performers will be tackling the subject from their own particular viewpoints and sharing their thoughts and words with you.

Francesca Beard
Malaysian-born Francesca grew up on an island balanced on the equator, surrounded by sea-eagles. She now exists as a London-based poet who has been called ‘the Queen of British performance poetry’ (London Metro) and ‘spine-tingling’ (The Independent) plus many other (less flattering) things. She has performed her poetry all over the world, from a shopping mall in Bangkok to a prison in Colombia, to New York’s Nuyorican Café to Zimbabwe’s National Library.Read our Interview with Francesca Beard here

Poet in Residence Connor Byrne
Connor Byrne is a poet from Brighton, whose self-published pamphlets explore ideas of gender and relationships. They have performed at festivals, nationally and internationally, competed in slams and now help run poetry nights in Brighton whilst working on their first full length show and collection.

Music from Amber Burgoyne
Amber Burgoyne is a Jazz/Soul singer-songwriter. Combining smooth acoustic guitar and a voice 'that melts your heart'. She presents a sound heavily inspired by some of the great female voices; Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Etta James and Amy Winehouse. Her Debut Single I Don't Need Your Love was released in May 2019.

Brighton-based writer, performer, translator and compere, Rosy has a PhD on the Russian revolutionary poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, releasing two books of his work in translation. Rosy runs workshops in English literature, critical theory, poetry and performance skills at schools, Universities and community settings around the UK, and is currently touring her award-winning first full-length show, Passionate Machine.
