Fresh from their chamber concert of Schumann and Brahms, Joanna MacGregor directs principal string players of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra in a vibrant programme ranging from Purcell to Piazzolla. The first half opens with Bach’s spicy F minor keyboard concerto, with one of his loveliest and most famous slow movements. Mozart, Arvo Pärt and Piazzolla all respond imaginatively to Bach’s contrapuntal legacy, ending with with Piazzolla’s fiery Libertango. The second half focuses on English music. Purcell’s magnificent Chacony was most probably written at eighteen, in his new role as court composer for the court band Twenty-Four Violins, and is performed in Benjamin Britten’s rich arrangement. The concert closes with a rare gem - Ralph Vaughan Williams’ big-boned and romantic piano quintet, featuring the double bass.
The remarkable wealth of orchestral talent is led by the peerless Thomas Gould, returning after his performance of The Lark Ascending at the Dome in 2019. A guest leader for the Brighton Philharmonic, Thomas is leader of Britten Sinfonia, and has worked with Aurora Ensemble, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the LA Philharmonic. Kathy Shave has led, amongst others, English Touring Orchestra and London Chamber Orchestra, and works with Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, and Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Violist Sascha Bota has recently relocated to London after five years with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, guest-leads the London Mozart Players and the Philharmonia, alongside being a member of the Navarra String Quartet. BPO’s Peter Adams is principal cellist of the Oxford Philharmonic and City of Oxford Orchestra, and Stephen Warner works regularly with Nigel Kennedy, as well as principal bass with the English String Orchestra.
Joanna MacGregor CBE is one of the world's most innovative musicians. As a solo pianist and concerto artist she has appeared in over eighty countries, and broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and TV. Joanna has been artistic director for Bath and Dartington International Festivals, the Royal Opera House, and Luxembourg Philharmonie, and is known for her influential role as Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music. Joanna has just been appointed Principal Conductor and Music Director of Brighton Philharmonic, as it approaches its centenary.
