Brighton Philharmonic join forces with some of the greatest jazz players on the British scene today exploring the cult figure Moondog, whose influence has been felt from the streets of 1960s New York to DJ Mr Scruff.
Internationally acclaimed saxophonist Andy Sheppard has long been an artistic partner of Joanna MacGregor, and their first half explores their popular album, Deep River: Deep South gospel and blues meet electronica, with music by Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. The second half explodes into Sidewalk Dances, a 12-movement orchestral suite based on Moondog’s famous short compositions, including Voices of Spring, Bird’s Lament, Dogtrot and Single Foot. Moondog’s iconic music mixes swing, Native American rhythms, catchy melody and - above all – his love of Bach
