For BPO's opening concert of the 2019/20 season they welcome the “Violin Operator” Christian Garrick and friends from the Christian Garrick Quartet and the Budapest Café Orchestra to perform music from South America and beyond with the Brighton Philharmonic Strings.

This special programme of tango, jazz and gypsy-folk music, showcasing the violin in its many guises, features works by Astor Piazzolla, John Dankworth, Anne Dudley and Christian Garrick.

Leonid Desyatnikov’s now well established working of Piazzolla’s sizzling Four Seasons of Buenos Aires for violin soloist and string orchestra, complete with echoes of Vivaldi, was played by Christian with the BPO under Barry Wordsworth in 2006. This performance sees the Desyatnikov score expanded to integrate elements of Piazzolla’s original bandoneon-led octet arrangement to enhance the flavour.

In 2005 jazz composer and saxophonist Sir John Dankworth was commissioned by the NYO to compose a new jazz violin concerto which received its premiere at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall. This rhythmic, bluesy and expansive piece, written for Christian Garrick, bounds along in the spirit of Gershwin’s great jazz orchestral works, and is centred on the solo violin and a classic piano-bass-drums jazz trio.

Other works include an orchestral suite of Anne Dudley’s Poldark TV score, original pieces by Christian Garrick from his large scale 1996 album The Secret Light Show and a helping of folk-gypsy hijinks from the Budapest Café Orchestra.
