Our exciting music project - in association with Resident – goes from strength to strength. Embrace a summer of the freshest talent and energy from the Brighton music scene. This July SPECTRUM is headed up by psych-folk-rock quintet Jouis.

Jouis (Jhew-ee) are a 5 piece band based in Brighton, UK. Combining Jazz, Psychedelia and Progressive Rock, their sounds are designed to open your mind, and spirit you away to new lucid dimensions. Jouis is a French word roughly translated as 'high enjoyment' (derived from 'Jouissance'), a philosophy the band has upheld since its inception in 2008 at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. Playing regular shows across the UK, they quickly began cultivating a dedicated fan base, releasing 2 EPs and a 7” single, and drawing the attention of BBC 6 Music.

'On debut album Dojo these young lads have clearly studied their craft - and listened to a pile of acid-rock and prog albums to boot' Record Collector

'Masterly ’70’s-styled psych-folk-rock from Brighton quintet 8/10' Uncut

'Like Amnesiac-era Radiohead meets early Pink Floyd but with a pop-led futuristic vision' Gigwise

Jouis are currently working on new material and will be playing at Secret Garden Party and Shambala this summer. WEBSITE

Joe McCarty

In mid 2014 Joe McCarty's first LP 'Old News' was finished and ready for release, in aid of playing the songs live Joe gathered together musicians from other Brighton-based bands, such as, Time For T, Annaca and The Peppermint Beat Band. The band performed the album in its entirety at a sold out show at The Old Market Inn, Brighton.

Since then they have crafted their unique sound and new material around Joe's clinically written melodies and jazz influenced chord patterns, prompting comparisons to Harry Nilsson, James Taylor and The Band.

2015 will see their first release as a full band, an A & B side single, with a tour to support.

Buddha Blood

Channeling mid 60s psychedelia but with a contemporary edge, Buddha Blood take us on a journey of droning melodic riffs and fuzzed, gravelly vocals.

'Buddha Blood separate themselves from all the insufferable reverberated b******t bands that seem to plague Brighton's Psychedelic scene. Thank God there’s still some diamonds in the rough out there and as a new band, it’s exciting to see where they go from here on out.' Giveitbackmagazine.com

FACEBOOKNeuroHarp (Downstairs)

NeuroHarp is a brainwave controlled stringed instrument. It uses EEG technology to capture signals that pass through our brains and uses them to directly control the mechanical, stringed sound structure. It is performed alongside percussion to reveal new rhythmic and melodic patterns, through developing the dexterity and alternate uses of this electrical energy.

The improvised performances, utilise the conflicting levels of concentration required to play both instruments, and creates an aural representation of these responses.
