Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra revels in Mahler’s lyrical, dream-like Symphony no.4, directed by Conductor Laureate Barry Wordsworth and joined by the great soprano Carolyn Sampson.
A glow of serenity and peace emerges from Mahler’s fifty-minute Symphony no.4; this sunlit work reflects the composer’s profound love of nature, and his preoccupation with German romantic folk poetry from Das Knaben Wunderhorn. Famous for its opening of sleigh bells, this is Mahler’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. A child’s vision of life in heaven - sung by the soprano soloist in the finale - is preceded by three masterful movements weaving folk melody, country fiddle music ghosted by shadows, and a gorgeous Adagio - which Mahler considered his finest. Before that, Haydn’s Symphony no.88 is a model of wit and sophistication, down to the bagpipe drones of the Minuet and the unabashed eruption of contrapuntal fireworks in the finale.
Barry Wordsworth and the BPO are joined by the superb British soprano Carolyn Sampson, whose performances at Glyndebourne, BBC Proms, Opéra de Paris and Salzburg draw the highest accolades. Before the interval, Carolyn performs two of her favourite Mozart operatic arias, with her inimitable style and panache.
Carolyn Sampson’s voice was, as always, a model of beauty combined with style…luminous perfection. Seen and Heard
