Elgar Enigma Variations
A delightfully contrasting programme opens in foot-tapping style as Marche Militaire leads to two choral masterpieces by Parry: I Was Glad and Blest Pair of Sirens are works of sumptuous nobility that were performed at the Royal wedding in 2011. Enigma Variations includes the immortal ‘Nimrod’, the unofficial anthem of national remembrance, while Strauss’s sinuous Oboe Concerto makes an eloquent 150th anniversary tribute to the composer.
