Sussex Salon
Whole life sentences - should Life mean life?
This salon explores the nature of unreviewable prison sentences: should there be such an absolute bar? If so which crimes and what circumstances should merit a total bar on sentence review? How could the law be altered to reflect future changes that may not be contemplated by the court at the time of sentence? The panel includes: Professor Stephen Shute - Head of the School of Law, Politics and Sociology (University of Sussex), Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Justice and appointee to a panel of experts to advise HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) on prison issues , Frances Crook, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform and Juliet Lyon, Director of the Prison Reform Trust.
