Holst The Planets Op.32
The final concert of the season pulls out all the stops with Gustav Holst’s eternally popular suite The Planets, written during the First World War. Sir William Walton’s Cello Concerto, written in 1956, is one of his most original and atmospheric compositions, recorded by many of the great cellists and performed here by soloist Raphael Wallfisch. Many will not have heard of Walton’s friend, the eccentric Lord Berners, whose ballet music and songs have a distinctly ironic touch.
