In the right hands, one tune can unlock a universe. Dvořák took a half-forgotten song and turned it into an orchestral work of magical warmth and colour. Tchaikovsky used one of his very greatest melodies to throw down an epic challenge to a virtuoso pianist: the brilliant Igor Tchetuev picks up the gauntlet this evening. And Elgar – well, he never told anyone the secret of his Enigma. Instead, he created a musical portrait-gallery that’s become part of our national life. Renew your acquaintance with Dan the Bulldog, Nimrod, and all the rest of Elgar’s ‘friends pictured within’ as Rory Macdonald conducts the LPO in music that goes straight to the heart.
