Bold new play Once Upon a Time in Sokoto is the inaugural production of Touring Together, a new initiative from producing companies China Plate and Fuel Theatre in collaboration with Brighton Dome and other regional theatres to bring exciting stories and fresh perspectives to audiences across England. Written by Nigerian-born poet, playwright and artist, Inua Ellams, whose work has been staged at the National Theatre, Once Upon a Time in Sokoto is a gripping family drama, situated within the events that precede the creation of modern-day Nigeria. Accompanied by a stunning score, this "exuberant and engaging" (The Guardian) production is not to be missed (Tue 17-Sat 21 Nov).
Experience what happens when opposing forces clash and worlds collide in Fire Fire, a "beautiful and deeply affecting" (The Spy in the Stalls) drama about taking risks, and the power and purpose that can be found in protest (Mon 12 Oct). Critically-acclaimed Nation sees Brighton Dome's Studio Theatre in the round for the very first time, as the audience becomes witness to a community shaken by violence in an arresting portrayal of the political power of stories (Thu 12-Sat 14 Nov).
The drama continues with stunning re-imagined classics. Juliet & Romeo is a modern-day interpretation of the timeless story. Romeo and Juliet have survived their teenage ordeal and find themselves facing even fiercer demons; middle-age. It’s a dry and humorous re-telling that considers our obsession with youth and the elusive nature of longevity, while expertly blending theatre with movement and contemporary dance (Thu 12 Nov – Sat 14 Nov). For more genre-defying performances, don't miss Duck Pond. The latest spectacle from Australian-based circus troupe Circa combines elements from Swan Lake and the Ugly Duckling in a breath-taking performance full of humour and heart. Expect jaw-dropping aerials and exhilarating lifts in this production for the whole family (Wed 23-Mon 28 Dec, suitable for 5 plus).
Dance company Thick & Tight’s award-winning show Natural Behaviour is a fusion of variety show and biology lecture. Using human and non-human examples to explore what it means to be natural, it is a "ridiculous and quite wonderful" (The Guardian) performance that celebrates diversity in all its forms (Tue 13 October). In Congregational, you can worship at the altar of the dancefloor. Written and hosted by artist and vocalist, Fatt Butcher, Congregational features live piano and a choir of professional queer vocalists, complete with transcendent DJing and a stellar original score that pays homage to the communion of nightclubs and the power of dance music to bring people together. An immersive celebration of the queer joy and community found in dance music, this is the show that lets you leave it all on the dancefloor (Fri 30 Oct).
Experience the joys of a traditional Ceilidh in Ceilidh: The Musical in the Corn Exchange from Tue 15 Dec-Sun 20 Dec. Following the lives of a pair of father-and-son Ceilidh callers, this uplifting show combines the old with the new in a heartwarming tale of family, queer love, tradition and legacy. More than a play and more than a night out, feel the beat of the fantastic live band and dance the night away!
