Carlos Acosta brings his critically acclaimed Cuban dance company to Brighton Dome

News

Following the success of Acosta Danza’s Brighton debut in 2017, the critically acclaimed Cuban company return to Brighton Dome on 17 & 18 Mar 2020 with Evolution as part of a UK-wide spring tour. With a programme of four new and existing dance works, the company will be joined on stage by world renowned Carlos Acosta in the spirited finale piece Rooster, set to a soundtrack by The Rolling Stones.

Carlos Acosta launched Acosta Danza in Havana, Cuba after retiring from The Royal Ballet in 2015. Under his artistic directorship, the company is made up of some of Cuba’s finest ballet and contemporary dancers and pays tribute to the vibrancy of Cuban culture.

Acosta Danza: Evolution is made up of four contrasting works crafted by a diverse range of international choreographers.

Paysage, Soudain, la nuit
, a new work for the company by visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg, approaches Cuban culture through rumba, a genre of traditional Cuban music with African roots. A visual installation, Vientos (2017) by Cuban artist Elizabet Cerviño sets the backdrop to the piece.

Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents Faun, a duet set to Debussy’s original score with additional compositions by British Indian musician Nitin Sawhney CBE. One of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers in the world, he is known for fusing different cultures and styles in his work.

Spanish choreographer Maria Rovira, created the mesmeric solo dance, Impronta, specifically for company dancer Zeleidy Crespo whose training is rooted in the folkloric dance styles of Cuba.

Leading British choreographer Christopher Bruce CBE presents Rooster, a joyous finale with Acosta performing with his company to a rock n roll soundtrack.

Acosta Danza’s Evolution UK Tour Spring 2020 is co-produced by Sadler’s Wells and Valid Productions and presented by Dance Consortium.
