Acclaimed & family friendly one day festival JAZZ RE:FEST offers free tickets for under 16s

News, Contemporary Music

Brighton Dome is hosting an annual one-day festival celebrating UK jazz and jazz-inspired music and culture on Sun 22 July, and under 16s can go free! Having previously been hosted at London’s Southbank Centre for the last five years, JAZZ RE:FEST’s first iteration outside of London - produced by the Jazz re:freshed music arts organisation - showcases the incredibly diverse, colourful, expressive and creative world of jazz music and alternative culture.

JAZZ RE:FEST will feature live performances from over 60 musicians, artists & DJs including Vels Trio, Daniel Casimir, SEED, Yussef Dayes, Noya Rao, Blue Lab Beats, Ruby Rushton and many more to be announced.

Blending analogue and digital elements, Blue Lab Beats have supported Thundercat, Roy Ayers and Mulatu Astatke, and have performed at Glastonbury, WOMAD, and Love Supreme. SEED Ensemble meanwhile, combine jazz with inner-city London, West African and Caribbean influenced groove, with the ten-piece band (led by alto saxophonist and composer Cassie Kinosh) exploring a blend of genres through both original compositions and arrangements.

Brighton-based experimental group Vels Trio have shared the stage with acts such as Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles, Sons of Kemet, Moses Boyd's Exodus and more. Vels Trio’s sound can be characterised by their heavy grooves, emotionally charged songwriting, coupled alongside expressive, progressive modern musicianship to create frenetic live sound structures.

Dan Casimir (winner of The Musicians’ Company’s Young Jazz Musician Award 2016-2017) has become a regular fixture within the UK jazz scene, providing his heavyweight upright sound for the likes of Jean Toussaint, Binker Golding, Jason Rebello, Lonnie Liston Smith, Camilla George and Nubya Garcia to name a few. Quartet Ruby Rushton are led by multi-instrumentalist Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne, whose long playing compositions recall the likes of Herbie Hancock and Yusef Lateef, but come imbued with percussive flourishes (shakers, cowbells) and a sort of wild British originality.

Jazz re:freshed is a multifaceted music arts organisation at the forefront of the UK jazz revolution worldwide, raising the profile of, and demonstrating the breadth of expression within UK jazz and jazz-influenced music and challenging the preconceptions that kept jazz on the side lines far too long. In 2003, Jazz re:freshed created a weekly residency for musicians in the jazz world who wanted to experiment and push boundaries when few opportunities to try these experimentations out live were available. These musicians inspired a lot of the cream of today’s UK jazz scene who have also graced the stages of Jazz re:freshed’s events.

Yvette Griffith, Executive Director of Jazz re:freshed said:
