Take someone on a Valentine's date to remember... or take yourself on a date, you sexy thing!
Forget fretting over heart-shaped gifts and overpriced meals this Valentine’s day and head to Brighton Dome. We've picked out some antidotes to V-Day dread including a little dancing, a sprinkle of live music and plenty of silliness. And remember, there’s more to life than coupledom, so why not have a little me time? You deserve it!
First up is ‘How was it for you?’, a show penned as ‘gently interactive’ (so don’t panic) and all about intimacy, created by Kefi Chadwick and Mark Maughan. This intriguing show was specially developed through interviews with Brightonians and festival-goers and explores different experiences of intimacy and sex, and how differently we all live them. Don’t worry, they’ll say most of the words! Just sit back, relax and tuck into the snacks and drinks provided (Sat 14 & Mon 16 Feb, 7.30pm, Tue 17 Feb, 6pm).
Quick! Book the babysitter for our popular Valentine’s Ceilidh and sweep someone off their feet (literally). There’s no better place to do it than in the Corn Exchange, led by the much loved Sussex Pistols, whose resident caller will help you through the dance steps. Brighton’s most barnstorming barn dance promises great music, great fun and love in the air this Valentine’s weekend (Sat 14 Feb, 8pm).
Fancy yourself as a bit of a risk taker? Try this on for something dangerous, combative and a little bit sexy. Wim Vandekeybus’ What the Body Does Not Remember, which stunned the world of dance in 1987, has been revived with an incredible new cast and still stands as one of the most stunning pieces of dance ever made. With choreography that balances on the razor edge of attraction and repulsion, see dancers battle it out for power in a performance spurred on by aggression, fear and danger. Don't miss this passionate evening of dance for the most adventurous among you (Tue 17 Feb, 7.30pm).
And now for something you simply can’t miss…
The legendary Justin Vivian Bond is heading to Brighton! The cabaret messiah and trans-genre artist will be seducing us with a musical evening of songs about obsession, sex, romance and all their queer and mysterious complications, in a show fittingly entitled ‘Love is Crazy’. Expect the unexpected with songs associated with Bond’s stage and film appearances and tracks made famous by The Cure, The Divine Comedy, Pet Shop Boys and more… (Wed 18 Feb, 8.30pm)
Looking for something silly to take off the pressure? Never fear! Josie Long presents 'Cara Josephine' at her most personal, in a show about love and being outdoorsy as a bear. Her cult optimism is sure to leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling and get the night off to a raucous start (Thu 19 Feb, 8pm).
