Young Brighton & Hove Musicians Selected for Prestigious Concerts

Talented young musicians from Brighton and Hove are about to go on tour in Western Bohemia, performing at the prestigious Czech Museum of Music this July. The tour is part of Brighton & Hove Music & Arts (BHMA) programme of activities for students performing with Brighton Youth Orchestra and Brighton & Hove Youth Percussion Ensemble.

More than 40 members, aged between 13 to 19, are performing concerts in Prague and spa towns in the Czech region to develop their performance skills and professional music development. The tour will culminate in a public performance in Brighton at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts on 11 July. Members of both ensembles have also been selected to perform at the National Music for Youth Festival in Birmingham, a celebration of the wealth of young musical talent across the UK.

Peter Chivers, Head of Brighton & Hove Music & Arts said:

“Part of our remit at BHMA is to prepare young musicians to develop their instrument skills and develop as performers. Touring is a large part of a musician’s life and we hope this opportunity will give them an insight into what it’s like to be on the road. The fact that these groups of students have been selected for the Music for Youth event is testament to their high standard of playing and how talented they all are.”

Milligan, a 17-year old percussionist added:

“The whole group are really excited to have the opportunity to learn what it’s like to be a musician on tour and to visit new cities and performing in front of audiences who have never seen us before. It’s also great for us to practice as much as we can so we can play for our friends and family back in Brighton at the end of tour concert. We can’t wait!”

Brighton Youth Orchestra has over 50 students from local schools and colleges in the region. The Orchestra performs major symphonic repertory and has collaborated with a wide range of soloists, narrators and guest conductors, including Nicola Benedetti, Evelyn Glennie and Joanna McGregor.

Brighton & Hove Youth Percussion Ensemble consists of approximately 10 students who perform a wide range of musical styles featuring pitched, unpitched, body and junk percussion instruments.

Brighton & Hove Music & Arts Summer Concert takes place at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts on Thurs 11 July at 7.30pm, tickets £8 or under 18s £2, buy tickets here.
