What If I Told You?

Thu 3 Aug 2017

Shortlisted for Amnesty International's Freedom of Expression Award 2017

'A gift for all who attend it… it’s hard to imagine an hour more warm and supportive than the one we spend with Pauline Mayers’ The Scotsman ★★★★

Throughout Pauline’s life and careers as a dancer and choreographer, she has defied assumptions based on her gender, background and race, tearing up the narrative that society tried to impose on her at every turn. Now she is ready to tell her story – entwined with the story of James Sims, self-ascribed ‘father of modern gynaecology’ who operated on slaves without anaesthetic.

In a blend of dance and theatre, Pauline Mayers gets us up on our feet and invites us to reconsider the stories we tell about our past and the history on which we build our futures.

After the show, Koan: What If You Told Us takes the conversation further and provides an opportunity for the audience to share thoughts and ideas.

‘Extraordinarily brave, fierce and huggable… a show that shakes up traditional theatre and power structures to put you in the picture in more ways than one’ The Guardian

Mayers is a wonderful host… her choreography has a compelling lineage, and with each movement there comes a meaning and story of its own’ A Younger Theatre ★★★★
