SPECTRUM: Kristin McClement

Thu 16 Jun 2016

Two new acts added: Nick Austin & Philippe Nash join us to round out an intimate evening of singer-songwriters presenting the best sounds in Brighton

We love music and know how much talent there is locally, which is why we joined forces with Brighton’s favourite record shop Resident to create the Spectrum project.

Each season we present musicians from all corners of the Brighton music scene in our Studio Theatre.

Kristin McClement

'Inventive, weighty pop music which dazzles, shimmers and glows exquisitely in the cold light of the day'

Kristin’s music is born of two separate worlds; the vast shape shifting landscape of her childhood South Africa engraved with the melancholic romance of old England's sacred woodland, rivers and valleys.

Her debut album The Wild Grips was released in February 2015 via Brighton based independent label Willkommen Records.

Produced by Christian Hardy of The Leisure Society, The Wild Grips is a wide-eyed rendering of modern folk song where the acoustic and the electronic rub alongside. Whilst making the album, Kristin and the band were influenced as much by artists like PJ Harvey and Portishead as they were by the ‘pure’ sounds of Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen.

Kristin has toured throughout the UK, Italy, France, Portugal and Germany. She has shared stages with Benjamin Clementine, Laura Marling, Jessica Pratt and Sam Lee, to name just a few.

The Boy Who Kicked Pigs

The Boy Who kicked Pigs is the alter-ego of Independent Brighton musician Karl Bray. Expect haunting lyrics, beautiful melodies and harmony. Often working and writing with other musicians along with recording solo contemporary classical piano music. Don't be scared, be inspired.

‘The Boy Who Kicked Pigs’ name comes from a book written by actor Tom Baker who once flung Karl a 50 pence piece whist busking in their home town of Kent.

In June, The Boy Who Kicked Pigs released a cover of Erasure's hit song A Little Respect.

Nick Austin

“Angelic and delicate sound”

Nick Austin is a Brighton-based songwriter and performer. He has recorded and released two albums Nick Austin (2015) and The Violet Hour (2016).

Listen to The Violet Hour on Bandcamp, and get a taste of his dreamy alternative folk sound for yourself.

Philippe Nash

Philippe Nash makes captivating music that constantly outgrows itself. You become incredibly close to the smallest detail in his performances - gentle refrains, harmony, building rhythmical interplay - before the songs take you by the hand and show you each beautiful moment together inside a larger, whole, captivating movement that remains unpredictable and yet simultaneously homely.
