Mamma Mia! We’re Celebrating 50 Years Since ABBA’s Historic Eurovision Win
Join us for a plaque unveiling and a fabulous weekend of music, dance & family entertainment inspired by the Swedish supergroup.
Fifty years ago on 6 April 1974, ABBA made history on stage at Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall as winners of the 19th Eurovision Song Contest, as their entry, Waterloo, scored 24 points and catapulted the Swedish pop sensations on to worldwide fame. We’re planning a few celebrations...
Marking Where History Was Made
Join us for the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on Thu 4 Apr, 12pm at Brighton Dome.
We’re installing the plaque to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic moment following the recent reopening of the magnificent Grade I and Grade II listed Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre after a major 6-year refurbishment. This included conserving vital heritage features and improving artist and audience accessibility, plus visitors can explore a new interactive digital timeline detailing the venues’ rich heritage, including ABBA’s win. There’s even a new dressing room named Waterloo!
Same Songs, Same Date, Same Stage
From dance-athons and Eurovision royalty to fabulous drag, we have a weekend packed with ABBA-tastic festivities for everyone to enjoy...
On Sat 6 Apr, join stars of Eurovision as they grace the Concert Hall stage with GOLD, an evening of ABBA’s greatest hits and more music from the Eurovision songbook. Hosted by Sweden’s 1999 Eurovision winner Charlotte Perelli, performers include the UK’s 1997 winner Katrina, of Katrina and the Waves, 2000 entrant Nicki French, Irish winner Linda Martin and more, all backed by the hugely talented Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus.
Time To Boog(aloog)y!
On the same day, legendary Brighton entertainer Boogaloo Stu, DJ Dynamite Sal, dance troupe Sparklemotion and cabaret singer Dolly Rocket will transform the Studio Theatre into an ABBA-fuelled party with Dynamite Waterloo.
It'll be an afternoon of back-to-back ABBA hits, singing and dancing, plus appearances from internationally acclaimed cabaret star Le Gateau Chocolat and saxophone-playing drag queen, Snow White Trash, who will join the stage for an ABBA tribute like no other.
Pop-Icon Puppetry
Throughout the weekend, families can attend Knowing Me, Knowing You craft workshops and learn how to make and animate table-top puppets of the Swedish stars. Each session ends with a group ABBA-themed dance-athon for participants and their puppets!
