Musical adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s beloved tale A Squash and A Squeeze comes to life on stage this half-term at Brighton Dome
A new stage adaptation of A Squash and a Squeeze by beloved author of The Gruffalo Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, comes to the beautifully restored Brighton Dome Corn Exchange this October half-term.
This musical adaption, a co-production between Little Angel Theatre and The Lowry combines songs, puppetry and storytelling to bring the much-loved picture book to life.
First published in 1993 as Julia Donaldson’s very first picture book, A Squash and a Squeeze has sold more than two million copies worldwide. The story of a little old lady who learns to appreciate what she has continues to resonate with audiences more than 30 years later, and this new musical adaptation offers a fresh way to experience the classic tale.
The production will run for five performances from Mon 27 to Wed 29 Oct. Designed for children aged 3 and above, the show also welcomes adults who enjoy classic storytelling. A relaxed performance on Tuesday will provide an inclusive and accessible experience, with adjusted sound and lighting to ensure comfort for all audience members.
Since its founding in 1961, Little Angel Theatre has been a pioneer in using puppetry to inspire young imaginations and bring stories to life on stage.
This new adaptation of Donaldson’s much-loved tale is led by Little Angel Theatre’s director Samantha Lane, with music and lyrics by award-winning performer and composer Barb Jungr. Lane and Jungr’s acclaimed collaborations in children’s theatre include the Olivier Award–nominated The Smartest Giant in Town (2023), as well as The Singing Mermaid and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
The cast, featuring Ruth Calkin, Mark Esaias and Gilbert Taylor, present an imaginative interpretation of the much-loved story, adding a touch of magic to Brighton’s half-term calendar.
Also coming up for children and families at Brighton Dome are Crafty Kids, craft workshops for children aged 3-11 and their parent or carer, including Autumn in a Box on Sun 16 Nov and Wonderful Winter in a Box on Sat 6 & Sun 14 Dec. On Sat 11 Nov Family Day Take Part is Brighton's biggest free celebration of arts, culture and heritage, showcasing the city’s Global Majority and diaspora communities and featuring live music, workshops, colourful head wrapping, food and more.
In February, Little Angel Theatre will return to the Corn Exchange with a musical adaptation of Michael Rosen’s thrilling picture book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, featuring puppets and songs.
