A celebration of new jazz

There is an explosion of new, expressive music in the UK happening right now that is gathered loosely under the umbrella of Jazz, Nu-Jazz or Alt-Jazz.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, both corto.alto and Rebecca Vasmant Ensemble will no longer be able to perform at the event. We are delighted that Mrisi will now be supporting Balimaya Project.

Balimaya Project bridge West African folkloric Mandé music together with jazz and the sounds of Black London – to create an eclectic, soul-stirring style that's steeped in rich traditions.  They are supported by the Brighton based multi-faceted pianist, singer and rapper Mrisi.

This show will now take place in the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre. Please note the show in the Studio Theatre will begin at the slightly later time of 8pm (doors at 7.30pm), and will finish at approx 10.15pm.

Part of Brighton Dome Record Label Nights, presenting a series of live music shows curated by some of the UKs most exciting independent record labels.

Balimaya Project (New Soil x Jazz Re:freshed)

A 16-piece band, led by Yahael Camara Onono, that straddled generations, social circles and backgrounds, but like him were united by their experience of what he calls the “third culture” of second generation migrants. Drawing on the talent and expertise of London-based musicians from Burkina Faso to the Gambia, Balimaya Project sought to engage intentionally with the musical and cultural nuances so often overlooked in the discourse around music from the African continent.
