Arvo Pärt’s compellingly beautiful music has reached wide audiences through ECM label, and this concert offers a rare chance to hear Lamentate, his dramatic ritual for piano and orchestra, as well as the enduringly popular and meditative violin solo Spiegel im Spiegel. Pärt’s music has enthralled listeners for decades, evoking a haunting spirituality though space and simplicity.
Eminent conductor Sian Edwards continues with Sibelius’ sweeping second symphony, reflective of Nordic light and snowy mountains. It was a beacon for Finnish independence as well as personal liberation: ‘My second symphony is a confession of the soul,’ he wrote, and it’s become one of Sibelius’s most loved works
