Meet your host AFLO. the poet
Award-winning Brighton-based spoken word artist, AFLO. the poet, presents an uplifting night of spoken word featuring fresh local talent and special guests from across the UK.
AFLO. the poet is an activist and academic who embraces creative expression to disrupt the status quo and inspire social change, using poetry as a vehicle to address hard-hitting topics, particularly racism and mental health, primarily speaking from her lived experiences. Previously an in-house artist for Brighton Dome, she is a significant force directing change in Brighton's creative scenes and continues to sow seeds across the country
About Maureen Onwunali
Maureen Onwunali is a Dublin-born Nigerian poet and a two-time national slam champion. Her work has been featured by various musicians, radio shows, and organisations, including Apples and Snakes, BBC Radio London, BFI, Hay Festival, Pearson, The Poetry Society, Obsidian Foundation, Roundhouse, TFL, and the Irish Embassy.
About Mark 'Mr. T' Thompson
Performer. Educator. Creative. The order of priority certainly changes, but these are the three professional pillars on which my career has been built. A youth worker since 1990, a professional actor and facilitator since ’96, a fully qualified Drama teacher since 2004 and have been performing my spoken word and using it to facilitate workshops on culture, identity and poetics since before I self-published my first book of poems Mixed Messages in 2009. My creative work has seen me tour nationally and feature internationally as far afield as Johannesburg, appearing in venues from the Hackney Empire to the Paralympics, and facilitating workshops with participants from KS1 right through to further education and adult audiences, while also featuring on Radio 4, BBC London, Jazz and Choice FM.
